HANOI, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities in Vietnam's capital Hanoi have proposed a pilot scheme to ban gasoline-powered motorbikes in the core area of Hoan Kiem Ward during designated hours, local daily VnExpress reported Thursday.

Under the low-emission zone proposal, the pilot will run from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2026, covering 11 streets in Hoan Kiem Ward.

Gasoline-powered motorbikes, including those used for ride-hailing services, will be banned from 6 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and from 6 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2027, the city plans to expand the pilot area to include 14 streets in Cua Nam Ward.

In a later phase from Jan. 1, 2028, to Dec. 31, 2029, the low-emission zone will be extended to cover the entire area within the city's Ring Road 1, spanning more than 26 square kilometers.
